“Amazing
local talent”. Well that’s how Bernie describes
listeners of The Love Show, Sundays midnight till
2 and Saturdays 6 to 8am. Talent and experience
is remarkable in his case too. He comes to us
with over 15 years radio experience, presenting
programmes on BFBS, G-Cap and UKRD stations, as
well as being the voice of countless radio and
TV commercials. As a journalist Bernie has written
features for popular music magazines, and as an
author he has penned a careers advice book on
getting started in radio. He also has a master’s
degree in anthropology.
“Love isn’t serious and the last thing love is,
is mature! No matter how young or old you are,
if you’ve ever been in love you’ll know it’s all
about having fun, it’s a helter-skelter ride of
thrills, it’s about feeling good about yourself
and making others happy. Love is sexy, it’s exciting,
it’s about being a kid all over again, being rebellious
and having a good laugh”.
So The Love Show isn’t the usual formula of the
same old ballads? “Not at all, we’ve moved on
from that, this is an up-to-date love show. The
only thing that all the music on The Love Show
has in common is that they’re all love songs in
one way or another, but people often forget about
the rock and club hits, the folk and country hits,
and the chart hits that are also love songs, and
the contemporary songs about women’s lives by
people like Natalie Imbruglia, Lucie silvas and
the Pussycat Dolls. People in relationships go
to clubs, they buy the latest records, and they’re
having fun too. Relationships revolve around common
interests, and they also thrive on the constant
mysteries of the differences between the sexes,
so The Love Show also isn’t afraid to explore
these with tongue-firmly-in-cheek whenever possible.
And just like the plethora of magazines which
fill the shelves with sexy and fit celebrities,
The Love Show is also aware of this popularity
in celebrities and look out for exclusive celebrity
sound bites”.
Is The Love Show cheezy? “Well love is by it’s
very nature cheezy isn’t it? ;-) No, I mean it
can’t be helped sometimes, because as we’ve said,
love is cheezy most of the time anyway, I mean
what could be more cheezy than a soppy valentines
card poem or a bunch of flowers? But we all lap
it up don’t we? If we listen to the cheeze-mongers
too much, then eventually saying hello to someone
will become a cheezy thing.”
What would you like to achieve with The Love
Show? “Happy listeners. It’s a love show first
and foremost, but it’s also a chill-out show,
we’re in ‘relax-zone’, ‘me-time’, an opportunity
to relax, collect your thoughts and recharge the
batteries, soak in the bath or what have you and
prepare for another week. So it isn’t only a show
for lovers.
