Rush Green Hospital, Essex. 7 hours
1 baby (ironic I know!) The 6th of March 1981
saw my arrival into the world at a healthy
weight of 9lbs 12oz, (I’m still trying to loose
the weight now!) I grew up in Hornchurch Essex,
attending both Hacton Junior School and Hall
Mead Secondary School until at the age of 13,
my family moved to Lanzarote. I finished my
formal schooling there obtaining O levels & A
Levels and then decided to throw it all away
and become a DJ, you should have seen my mums
face!
After a few years of working the Lanzarote
club scene as a DJ I progressed to Club Management,
looking after Paradise Beach Club, The Hippodrome, & The
Habana Café & Salsa bars. Radio
first fell in my direction a few years ago,
in fact Power FM was the first station I worked
on covering the then Drive Time host and hugely
popular Spencer James.
Talk about being thrown
in at the deep end!!! A month and 13 hours
on a ferry later I was enjoying life as a broadcaster,
a big change from the bright lights and loud
noise of the club scene. This also meant that
I had to get up at the time I was used to going
to bed! I have been a regular voice on Power
FM since 2002, originally as the station “Swing
Jock” and host of “The CRN Top
40 Chart Show”.
Following that it was
a two year stint on Network Drive, and endless
hours behind the scenes as the network’s
production manager and programme controller.
I took over the reigns on Breakfast in September
2006 and that is where you will find me today
as well as working as a free lance voice over
artist. During my radio career I have also
worked on some local stations in the Canaries
and care of modern technology you may have
heard me in the UK and on Internet stations
too.
So the questions I always get asked….
What it’s like to work “on the
radio”?
In honesty quite lonely, you
know that every one is out there listening
but for three hours it’s just you, your
microphone and lots of computers and flashing
lights. It’s not as easy as people think,
you need to know your audience and what gets
them going, breakfast is probably the most
difficult shift to work as you have to keep
it upbeat for the people that love the start
of a brand new day but not forget the people
that wish they were still tucked up in bed!
You get the chance to have a very public dig
at your mother in law and get free dieting
advice from your listeners. On the down side;
radio station tea is awful (or is that just
the way I make it?) You can’t leave your
hob-knobs lying around and all the jocks are
forever playing practical jokes on each other
so you never know what to expect.
What time
do you have to get up to get in for work?
Around
6.30 AM, I aim to get to the studio for half
seven to “morning prep” the show
although most of my research is done the night
before. Most memorable radio moments? Too many
to mention, outside broadcasts are always good
fun though! Ever met anyone famous? Yes – Quite
a few people actually.
Ever won an award?
Yes – I
completed my two times tables in under a minute
when I was 7, my teacher was very impressed
and gave me a gold star and certificate, my
parents were very proud.
Best compliment?
You’ve
got the perfect face and physique for radio...
The old ones are still the best!!
Radio Hero?
It has to be Neil “Doctor” Fox.
The guy is a legend from his Capital days and
provided me with the soundtrack to my childhood.
Although I have always been a fan of Chris
Tarrant & Steve Wright too!
Right that’s
your lot! Join me on the “Barclays Bank
Hits & Headlines Bigger Breakfast” Monday
to Friday 8-11am to find out more!
